Chopping Veggies, Changing Lives: Our Day with Second Helpings

Second Helpings is a nonprofit organization with a big mission: transforming lives through the power of food. They rescue surplus food from local grocery stores, wholesalers, and restaurants — food that would otherwise end up in landfills — and turn it into nutritious meals for those in need. Every single day, their team prepares and delivers over 5,000 meals to community partners across the city, including shelters, schools, neighborhood centers, and assisted-living facilities.

During our volunteer shift, we joined forces in their bustling kitchen, where we helped chop more than 35 pounds of fresh vegetables and prepared and wrapped over 200 hot dogs for upcoming meal distributions. It was fast-paced, meaningful, and incredibly rewarding.

Beyond hunger relief, Second Helpings also offers culinary job training to help adults build meaningful careers in food service — adding another layer of long-term impact to their work.
